"Under the Pavement, the Gravel Plain" is an investigative photo project that was created as part of the project course "Peripheral Landscapes" at Hochschule München under the direction of Professor Dr. Sue Barr.
The affluent city of Munich is literally sitting on a gray goldmine, as gravel is an important resource. The exploitation and resulting geological deformations, as well as climate change with drought and rising temperatures, make the subject a political issue. The provocative title of the book draws a parallel to the "Spontiszene", a student movement of the 68s. They expressed their perspectives with the slogan "Under the pavement lies the beach".
Underneath Munich lies a 1600 km2 large outwash plain, which shapes the geological structure of the surroundings. The gravel extraction and resulting changes in the landscape have significant impacts on our region. This photo series visits various places such as gravel pits, gravel plants, and major construction projects in Munich, to take a look at what is normally hidden beneath us.
